The Mia Health App uses PAI to measure your activity. PAI is short for Personal Activity Intelligence, made by researchers at the Nobel Prize winning Faculty of Medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The PAI algorithm is based on your heart rate and gives you a number that tells you how active you need to be during a week to have a greater chance of living a longer and healthier life. You earn PAI every time your heart rate increases, no matter which type of physical activity you choose to do. Almost one million individuals from all over the world have contributed to the PAI research, showing that those who stay at or above 100 PAI have lower risk of lifestyle diseases such as a heart attack, dementia and obesity.

What is VO₂ max?
Your VO₂ max is one of the best indicators of your overall health. It refers to the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take up and use to produce energy during vigorous endurance exercise.
Every cell in your body needs oxygen to function. Unhealthy lungs, a weak heart, stiff blood vessels, and ineffective muscle cells will all limit oxygen transport from air to muscle. Thus, your VO₂ max reflects the health of several body organs and tissues.
Mia Health estimates VO₂ max with NTNU's validated Fitness Calculator and uses artificial intelligence and PAI score to update your VO₂ max over time.
What is fitness age?
Your Fitness Age is calculated from your VO₂ max to let you know how old your body is. The lower your fitness age, the better you are protected from developing lifestyle diseases such as heart attack, depression, dementia, and several types of cancer.
To stay healthy, everyone should aim for a Fitness Age at or below their biological age.
